ABC of Election Process

  • Announcement: Election Commission generally announces the schedule of election a few weeks before the formal process set in motion. The model code of conduct for guidance of candidates and political parties immediately comes into effect after such announcement.
  • Notification: The formal process of election starts with notification. After notification, candidates can start filing their nominations. This is at least 23 days before the polling.
  • Last date of Nomination: This is generally a week after the Notification date. This means candidates get one week for them to be nominated.
  • Scrutiny of Nomination: This is done the next day of the last day of nomination.
  • Last day of withdrawal of Candidate: This is generally 2-3 days after the scrutiny of nomination.
  • Campaigning: A candidate gets at least 2 weeks for campaigning. He must stop campaigning before 48 hours of polling.
  • Polling: This is generally 3-4 weeks after the notification. This is after at least 23 days (1 week for nomination + 2 week of campaigning + 2 days before polling = 7 + 14 + 2 = 23 days).
  • Counting: This happens after polling of all the phases are complete. This is fixed by EC.
  • Completion of Election: Election results are out and election is complete.

The legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan

His work has had a fundamental role in the development of 20th century mathematics and his final writings are serving as an inspiration for the mathematics of this century On a height he stood that looked towards greater heights. Our early approaches to the Infinite Are sunrise splendours on a marvellous verge While lingers yet unseen the glorious sun. What now we see is a shadow of what must come. Sri Aurobindo, Savitri, 1.4 The story of Srinivasa Ramanujan is a 20th century “rags to mathematical riches” story. In his short life, Ramanujan had a wealth of ideas that have transformed and reshaped 20th century mathematics. These ideas continue to shape mathematics of the 21st century. This article seeks to give a panoramic view of his essential contributions. Born on December 22, 1887 in the town of Erode in Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan was largely self-taught and emerged from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential mathematicians of the 20th c...

Juvenile Legislation - Neuroscience and beyond

3 years back, Nirbhaya case created a stir in society as it saw a lower abyss in society. 6 persons were convicted for the heinous crime of rape, one of them was a juvenile. The  same juvenile created another stir when he walked out of juvenile rehabilitation home in December 2015. Icing to the cake of stirs was amendment of Juvenile Justice Act which added the provision that a juvenile of age between 16 to 18 be treated as adult for heinous crimes. Though this amendment has been criticized, but most peculiar and scientific criticism has come from Neuroscience professionals. They argue that the part called frontal lobe - the front part of the brain, is underdeveloped at the age between 16-18. This is the part which is responsible for decision making, impulse control, judgement and emotions. They further argue that in the condition of stress, the same frontal lobe shrinks losing their capacity to process information. In turn, the back of brain Amygdala - which is responsible fo...

Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions . These amount to an average of five per cent against 1990 levels over the five-year period 2008-2012. The major distinction between the Protocol and the Convention is that while the Convention  encouraged  industrialised countries to stabilize GHG emissions, the Protocol  commits  them to do so. Recognizing that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity, the Protocol places a heavier burden on developed nations under the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities.” The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on 11 December...
